The well-known sage (or salvia) is one of the oldest medicinal plants. It spread in antiquity, then in the Middle Ages, and was so popular that sage was specially grown as a medicinal plant. Sage is the birthplace of the Mediterranean. Today it is cultivated in many European countries (mainly in Italy and south-eastern Europe).
