Ukraine will conduct a large-scale study of the Black Sea

For the first time, in 2017, the FAO General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (FAO GKRS) will conduct in Ukraine a large-scale research and technical assistance project for the Ukrainian fish industry in order to train Ukrainian scientists to assess the main commercial fish stocks in the Black Sea.

Experts from FAO face the task of conducting exercises on the practical use of stock assessment models in Ukraine, the choice of analysis methods, and methods for determining the needs of scientific research in the field of fisheries. As a result of learning Scientists will determine the most popular commercial fish species in the Black Sea, their population and the main areas of distribution. In addition, identified fisheries can be added to the list for conducting case studies as part of the fishery monitoring program GKRS. The training will help Ukrainian scientists to operate with effective methods for collecting and analyzing information on marine living resources and to accurately assess the state of the Black Sea fish stocks.

Start of training is scheduled for the second half of 2017. The project will be funded by the FAO GOAC, and the exact time and place of the exercise will be announced later.
